IPL Photofacial San Diego
Dark spots, age spots, sun spots – an uneven skin tone is pigmentation. Pigmentation and sun damage can make you look years older and also be the precursor for skin cancer. Sun exposure triggers these dark spots, specifically the UVA rays which penetrate deep into your skin and cause aging. The solution to skin damage is counterintuitive: more light! Intense pulsed light, or IPL, is often used in IPL photofacials to counteract brown spots and other types of skin discoloration. Its bursts of broad-spectrum light energy pass through outer layers of the skin into the dermis, where their wavelengths are absorbed by melanin, tiny blood vessels, and other sources of irregular pigmentation. When melanin and other pigmentation absorb the light, they break down. Laser treatment can be the solution for skin discoloration and unwanted pigmentation. Reveal more beautiful skin and gain a more revitalized appearance.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What should I expect?
IPL Photofacial delivers visible results quickly. It is a powerful light-based treatment and alternative to microdermabrasion and chemical peels. Treatment sessions take just minutes, so there is little downtime. Pigmentation treatment or photorejuvenation reduces the appearance of dark spots and pigment on your face and body, including age spots, sun damage, moles and birthmarks.
Why is IPL Photofacial best for removing age spots and sun damage?
IPL Photorejuvenation is a non-surgical approach for treating age spots and sun damage, using powerful light-based technology to target unwanted pigment without harming surrounding skin. In just a few simple treatment sessions, pigment appears lighter and your skin looks clearer and younger. Skin revitalization is a great way to reduce the signs of aging on your hands and face. It is gentle and non-ablative; that means, the treatment does not work by forcibly stripping off the damaged top layer of skin.
How does skin revitalization work?
Skin revitalization treats age spots and sun damage by using an optimized light device to deliver light energy to your skin which is selectively absorbed by the unwanted pigment.
IPL photorejuvenation targets the dermis, “tricking” the lower level of the skin into thinking it has incurred a minor injury, which stimulates healing processes such as new collagen production.
What types of pigment can be treated?
IPL Photofacial San Diego is appropriate for treating age spots, sun damage, and freckles on the face, neck, chest, arms, hands, legs, and feet.
In addition to treating sun damage and hyperpigmentation, IPL Photofacial San Diego can also treat a flushed, red look due to the symptoms of rosacea. Broken capillaries and spider veins may also fade following a photorejuvenation procedure.
Am I a good candidate for this procedure?
IPL skin revitalization works on a variety of skin types. You should take a self-assessment of your Fitzpatrick Skin Type before any appointment so you have an idea of how your skin will respond to treatment. Contact us to schedule a consultation and find out if you are a good candidate for this treatment.
What kinds of results can I expect?
Following an IPL Photofacial San Diego treatment, you can expect to see a decrease in the appearance of unwanted skin pigment and a more even skin texture. Most certainly, you may expect a decrease in fine lines and wrinkles. IPL does more than an ordinary ‘anti-aging’ cream; in fact, this procedure can actively restore collagen.
How long does it take?
The procedure can be performed in as little as 30 minutes or less, depending on the size of the treatment area. Common places people receive IPL include the face, neck and chest, though we may accommodate any request where moderate to significant damage is present.
Is it painful?
Most people feel minimal discomfort during skin revitalization. Discomfort may come from wearing thick goggles meant to protect your eyes. You may also not like the use of cool gel over treatment area, which can come as an unusual sensation. Most importantly, we take steps to prevent injury to your skin. Your provider can discuss pain management options with you.
How many treatments will I need?
Multiple treatments may be needed; depending on the severity of your pigment, several treatments may be necessary to achieve the best results. After treatment, the pigment will temporarily darken and then will slough away to reveal your clear skin.
How quickly will I recover?
Most people resume regular activities immediately following the treatment session. This is considered a minimally-invasive lunchtime procedure with little to no downtime.
What are some limitations?
When it comes to sun damage and hyperpigmentation, we cannot claim this cosmetic procedure removes sun damage (as exposure to UV rays causes irreparable cell damage). However, lessening sun damage’s manifestations as hyperpigmentation is a realistic treatment goal. Hyperpigmentation is not only aesthetically unpleasing but some problem moles and other pigments may turn into skin cancer at later onset. The IPL treatment is mainly intended to address skin discoloration so your skin looks clearer.
