Botox is an excellent way to combat fine lines and wrinkles, and while the treatment is safe and approved by the FDA, your first appointment can still be daunting. To ease your anxiety, we have compiled a list of the essential information you need before getting Botox for the first time.
What is Botox?
Botox is derived from the bacterial toxin Botulin which has a paralytic effect on humans. First discovered in the 19th century, it has since been used for a variety of medical procedures including the treatment of migraines, TMJ, and hyperhidrosis. Botox is most commonly known for its cosmetic ability to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and restore a youthful appearance.
Cosmetically, Botox works best on dynamic wrinkles which develop from years of repeated facial movements like smiling or frowning. The neurotoxin in Botox paralyzes the nerves in the target area, effectively relaxing the muscles so the lines either fade or disappear completely depending on the severity of the wrinkles.
Preparing for Botox Treatment
While very few things can negate the effects of Botox, following some preparation steps can reduce post-injection bruising and swelling.
• If you have a history of cold sores, speak to your technician as Botox injections may trigger a flare up. Antiviral medication can be prescribed to prevent this.
• Avoid alcohol for three days before your appointment. Alcohol can increase bruising and make the bruising last longer than it normally would.
• For five days before your appointment, don’t take any blood thinning medications as they can increase the chances of swelling and bruising. Be sure to speak to your doctor if you take prescription blood thinners.
• If you use retinol in your skincare regimen, it’s important to stop using it for two days before and after your Botox appointment.
• On the day of your appointment, be sure to eat before going in to avoid lightheadedness.
What to Expect from Your First Botox Appointment
When you first meet your technician, they will perform a quick examination to determine whether there are any reasons you shouldn’t get Botox. They will then discuss your desired results with you and walk you through the procedure and aftercare steps.
If you feel it’s necessary, you may ask for a topical numbing cream to reduce discomfort. This can be helpful for people who are fearful of needles. The needle used will be extremely thin and most patients don’t feel anything during the procedure.
The entire appointment may only take around 10-15 minutes total. Afterwards, there might be bumps similar to insect bites at the injection sites. These bumps and any redness should calm down quickly with time and a cold compress. You may also notice some bruising that will go away within a few days.
Botox Aftercare
Aftercare is an essential part of getting Botox injections to ensure that you protect your skin and help the Botox work to the best of its ability. Follow these guidelines for post-Botox care.
• Don’t lie down for 4-5 hours after your injections.
• Avoid touching and putting pressure on your injection sites for as long as possible.
• Keep your face active by smiling, frowning, and laughing to encourage the Botox to work.
• Avoid direct sun exposure and prolonged exposure to heat.
• Don’t exercise or exert yourself for 24 hours as raising your blood pressure can promote bruising, swelling, and cause the Botox to spread.
• Avoid drinking any alcohol for at least 24 hours after your appointment as it can exacerbate bruising and swelling.
• Wait 1-2 days before using blood thinning medications again.
• Use cold compresses for 15–20-minute sessions to reduce soreness, swelling, and bruising.
Commonly Asked Botox Questions
What are the Risks of Botox?
The main risks associated with Botox are swelling, bruising, and asymmetry caused by stronger muscles on one side of the face. Going to a licensed professional will mitigate complications because with training and experience, all these risks are highly unlikely.
Is it Painful?
While there may be minor discomfort when the needle enters the skin, it shouldn’t be painful. Botox needles are very similar to insulin needles which are very thin. Compared to the needles used to draw blood, Botox needles are tiny so if you feel any pain, tell your technician immediately.
How Long Does it Take to Work and How Long Does it Last?
Many patients notice results within three to five days, but it can take up to two weeks to see the full effects. Botox is then slowly absorbed by the body over three to six months depending on your metabolism and exercise routines.
