Neurotoxins (Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®)

Neurotoxins (or neuromodulators) smooth the skin by relaxing harsh muscle movement of facial muscles. The neuromodulator is injected in small doses into the muscle to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and is especially effective when used preventatively. Results will last about 3-4 months.

How Neurotoxins Works

When botulinum toxin is injected, it blocks certain nerve signals that make muscles contract. The muscles relax, reducing unwanted wrinkles. With appropriate dosing, results can last about 3-4 months

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What is the Difference Between Dysport®® and Botox®?

keyboard_arrow_down

Dysport®® and Botox® are both injectable neuromodulators used primarily to treat and prevent wrinkles, but they have some differences in terms of formulation, dosing, diffusion, and potential uses. Here are the key distinctions:

  • Molecular Structure: Although both are derived from botulinum toxin type A, the proteins that accompany the toxin in Dysport®® and Botox® are slightly different, which affects their diffusion and potency.
  • Unit Dosing: The units of measurement for Dysport®® and Botox® are different. This means that a specific number of units of Botox does not equate to the same number of units of Dysport®; Dysport® generally requires more units to achieve similar effects as Botox.
  • Diffusion and Spread: Dysport®® tends to spread more than Botox®, which can be beneficial or undesirable depending on the area being treated. This characteristic makes Dysport®® potentially more effective for treating larger areas with fewer injections, but it also increases the risk of affecting unintended muscles.
  • Onset of Action: Some studies suggest that the effects of Dysport®® may appear sooner than those of Botox®, which can take several days to take full effect.
  • Duration of Effect: The duration of the effect is similar for both treatments, typically lasting about 3 to 4 months, although this can vary based on the individual, the area treated, and the specific conditions of the treatment.
  • Approved Uses: Both Dysport®® and Botox® are approved for aesthetic and medical uses, but their specific approved indications can vary. For example, both are approved for treating glabellar lines, but Botox® has a wider range of FDA-approved therapeutic uses.
  • Price: The cost may vary between the two treatments depending on the provider, location, and required dosage.

Choosing between Dysport®® and Botox® often depends on the specific needs and preferences of the patient, as well as the expertise and recommendations of the healthcare provider.
