Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, also called PCOS, is a condition from which about 10 to 15% of women suffer. The condition produces excess androgen, or testosterone, with symptoms that can include unwanted or extra hair growth on the neck, face, chest, lower legs and abdomen. With a condition like this, you can manage the symptoms over the long term, with laser hair removal being one of the treatments you can find useful to reduce hair growth and seeing results after a few sessions. It can help substantially to give you back the confidence that overgrowth of hair may have taken from you. Here is how we can help you manage hair growth related to PCOS.Am I A Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal? There are many things that you should know about laser hair removal. If you notice thicker or more hair due to your PCOS, laser hair removal won’t altogether remove the hair but make them lighter or finer and slower to grow back. At our medical spa, we welcome all clients for laser hair removal. We use two different laser technologies: one that works best on coarse, thick hair and the other on tanned and darker skin. Our lasers reduce hair growth on any skin or hair type. Unless you have a skin condition, you are more than likely to be an ideal candidate for this treatment, but we will consult with you first to establish how we can help you manage the condition. How Many Treatments Do I Need? One of the questions about laser hair removal that we receive revolves around how many treatments are needed. Because PCOS is caused by hormone overproduction, your body will react differently to laser hair removal, and it is more likely to grow back faster. It differs from person to person, and to know how many sessions you need to have, you first need to understand how the laser and hair growth process works. The laser targets hair during its growth cycle. Because hair grows at different rates, all hair won’t be targeted during one session. Hair growth occurs in cycles of four to six weeks on the face and six to eight weeks on the rest of the body. Depending on how fast and thick your hair grows, we can recommend about nine to 12 sessions for optimal hair growth reduction. To keep the hair at bay or reduce the growth time, you can come in for laser hair removal maintenance sessions every 12 to 15 weeks to maintain your smooth, feminine look. What Type of Equipment Do You Use?To ensure that we cater to all skin tones and hair thicknesses and target areas, we have two different lasers that work best on individual hair and skin tones. The Lumenis LightSheer Duet laser is a diode laser operating at an 800nm wavelength that penetrates deeply and is perfect for thick, stubborn hair often found with PCOS. The Lumenis Splendor X laser works with wavelengths and Alexandrite at different frequencies and is ideal for darker skin types or can be adjusted for lighter skin tones. We will assess your hair growth and use the laser that will be most effective.Any Side Effects I Should Be Aware of?All our equipment is safe to use on any part of the body. If you’ve ever experienced rashes, eczema, or any skin condition, we can always do a patch test and see how your skin reacts to the laser. The worst side effects you should experience are redness, itching, discoloration and irritation at the laser site. If you visit a center that doesn’t use the best equipment and professionally trained staff, you may risk a poor outcome, infection and even pain at the laser site. This is not common practice when you visit a professional spa for the best laser treatment.Schedule Your Laser Hair Removal Appointment TodayDo you have more questions about laser hair removal? I've been going to The Laser Cafe now for a couple years and love the services they provide. So far, I've only done hair removal but it is so much less painful than other places I have been. They also have great deals as well as a membership that I just started with a discount off of services each month. And, the staff are always so welcoming and friendly!!
