5 Common Mistakes to Avoid Regarding Botox®

August 2, 2021

Botox® in San Diego is a popular, non-invasive, safe, and effective treatment for restoring a youthful appearance in the face. However, specific actions, external elements, and certain substances can reduce its efficacy and slow your recovery. Find out what these factors are and why it’s essential to avoid them after your treatment.

1. What Is Botox®?

For those with noticeable facial dynamic lines—or folds mainly visible during facial movement—neuromodulators such as Botox® can help relax and soften lines by reducing muscle activity.

Botox® uses the botulinum toxin type-A to block nerve impulses to the muscles, temporarily paralyzing impulses that cause frowning, grins, or grimaces and smoothing the appearance of the overlying skin.

2. What Can I Expect During My Treatment for Botox® in San Diego?

The procedure will be almost painless. Your medispa nurse will inject the Botox® in tiny, safe doses across multiple sites in several rounds. Once this part of the process is done, your nurse will apply arnica gel to help prevent bruising or bleeding. Then, with limited or no downtime, you can head straight back to work with minimal side effects. Any mild pain, slight bruising, numbness, or headaches should resolve within hours or days.

To ensure the best and fastest result, there are several activities and behaviors that you should try to avoid immediately after your treatment and during healing.

3. Five Common Mistakes to Avoid Before and After Using Botox® in San Diego

While using Botox cosmetically to soften moderate to severe dynamic facial lines is safe, effective, and FDA-approved, for optimal results, you should avoid these five common mistakes.

  1. Not using a reputable professional: Administering injectables requires in-depth knowledge of the underlying facial muscle structure. Ask as many questions as necessary to establish your chosen professional’s certification and training, experience, and proficiency. Be aware of appropriate and inappropriate treatment areas. A member of our team can speak with you more about your treatment area options when you initially get in touch with us.
  2. Rubbing or massaging your face within hours of your treatment: Applying pressure or friction to your face, especially to the treatment areas, could inadvertently spread the injectable beyond target locations, ruining the effect and creating a lob-sided result, or causing relaxation where it is not necessary. For the same reasons, avoid applying skincare products or makeup for at least four hours.
  3. Being too active (or too relaxed): Avoid lying down, bending over, and any unnecessary exercise within four hours of your treatment. Too much activity or a prone position could cause the injectable to spread and migrate, while increased blood circulation could dilute the injectable, reducing its potency and action.
  4. Consuming alcohol: Refrain from alcohol consumption for 24 hours before and after your treatment. Although drinking alcohol won’t interfere with your results, it may exacerbate bleeding and bruising at the injection sites.
  5. Going in the sun: Sun exposure could increase the risk of hyperpigmentation at the injection sites, so protect your skin with sunblock and a hat or stay out of the sun for several days. In addition, avoid other intense heat sources, such as jacuzzis, saunas, or steam rooms, as they increase blood flow and the chances of swelling and bruising.
