How You Can Improve Overall Skin Tone with Microneedling

May 6, 2021

With so many skin rejuvenation treatments available, it’s hard to believe that one as simple and safe as microneedling can be so effective.

1. What is Microneedling?

Also called skin needling, the treatment does as the name suggests, stamping tiny, very fine needles all over the skin - usually the face, but it can be anywhere on the body. The needles penetrate up to 3.5mm deep, creating microscopic puncture ‘wounds’, causing the skin to synthesize collagen and elastin to promote stronger, more supple, and resilient skin and improving absorption of topically applied skincare products. We offer two application options: Rejuvapen NXT – a sleek handheld device using twelve stainless steel microneedles for targeted therapy. Our Vivace RF Treatment uses thirty-six insulated microneedles simultaneously combined with radiofrequency energy sent to the tip of the needles for enhanced collagen production.

Each treatment takes around 35 to 50 minutes depending on the area, with a numbing cream applied beforehand, and a nourishing mask applied post-treatment to soothe and hydrate. You won’t feel pain, but during Vivace RF, you may experience sensations of pressure on bony areas or a ‘pulsing pinch’ elsewhere. Afterwards, your skin will temporarily look red and may feel warm and tight.

Results may be noticeable after only one session, although we recommend ongoing regular sessions. An improvement of up to 80% in skin tone and condition has been reported, with collagen production noted up to six months post-treatment.

2. The History of Microneedling

First used over 100 years ago to treat pigmentation and scars, the technique was revived in 1997 by a Canadian plastic surgeon using tattoo needles to reduce scar tissue. In 1998, a different plastic and reconstructive surgeon - Dr. Des Fernandes, devised a small needle stamp and pioneered the procedure we know today as microneedling.

3. How Microneedling Benefits You

Having been around for a while, the treatment offers a tried, tested, well researched and documented procedure. Clinical research studies and empirical evidence suggest that microneedling is safe, usually painless and effectively addresses the following concerns:

Although home devices are now available, we recommend professional treatments to ensure you are applying the technique often enough to improve your skin but not too often and to guarantee that equipment is hygienic and operating optimally. Up to three sessions spaced at four to six-week intervals with regular follow-ups is usually sufficient.
